New Delhi, February 13:
A heated debate erupted in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday following the presentation of the parliamentary joint committee’s report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The session was briefly adjourned due to strong objections from the Opposition.
BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni, a member of the committee, presented the report in the Upper House. However, this move triggered loud protests from the Opposition benches, disrupting proceedings.
As Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar attempted to read out a message from the President, the ruckus intensified. Urging calm, Dhankhar reminded members not to disrespect the President and called on Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to restore order.
Despite repeated appeals, the disruption persisted, leading to a temporary adjournment of the House for ten minutes until 11:20 AM.
The report had earlier been submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on January 30.
