United States, January 22
Former US President Donald Trump has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, describing the war as “ridiculous.” Trump warned of imposing significant tariffs on Russian exports to the US and other countries if a resolution is not reached.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated his appreciation for the Russian people and highlighted his past rapport with Putin. He also acknowledged Russia’s sacrifices during World War II, emphasizing that his intentions were not to harm Russia but to encourage a peaceful resolution.
“I have always admired the Russian people and maintained a strong relationship with President Putin, despite the false narratives pushed by the Radical Left. Russia played a crucial role in winning World War II, with millions of lives lost in the process,” Trump wrote.
He continued, “However, the time has come to stop this senseless war. The situation will only escalate further. If a deal isn’t reached soon, I will have no choice but to impose high tariffs, taxes, and sanctions on Russian exports to the US and other nations. It’s better to resolve this conflict quickly and save lives. Let’s make a deal and bring an end to this unnecessary war.”
Kremlin Denies Negotiation Reports
Reports from November suggested that Trump and Putin had a private phone conversation from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, where they allegedly discussed Ukraine and territories occupied by Russia.
The Kremlin dismissed these claims, labeling them as “false information” and “fabricated reports.”
During his campaign, Trump asserted that the war in Ukraine would not have started if he were president. He pledged to bring a swift end to the conflict and criticized the Biden administration’s financial aid to Ukraine. Trump and his campaign argued that US assistance fuels a “pro-war” agenda benefiting defense companies and foreign policy proponents in Washington.
Trump’s remarks underline his stance on prioritizing diplomacy to resolve global conflicts while challenging current US foreign policy strategies.
