United States, December 10:
US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Harmeet K. Dhillon, an Indian-American attorney, as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. The announcement was made on Monday through Truth Social, a platform owned by Trump.
“I am pleased to nominate Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice,” Trump said in his post.
Trump highlighted Dhillon’s long history of defending civil liberties, stating, “Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished civil liberties, including taking on big tech for censoring our free speech, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID, and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against their workers.”
Dhillon, a leading election lawyer in the US, has worked to ensure that only legally cast votes are counted. She earned her degrees from Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School and served as a clerk for the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
“Harmeet is a respected member of the Sikh religious community. In her new role at the DOJ, Harmeet will be a tireless defender of our constitutional rights, and will enforce our civil rights and election laws FAIRLY and FIRMLY,” the President-elect added.
Born in Chandigarh, Dhillon, 54, moved to the US with her parents during her childhood. She made history in 2016 as the first Indian-American to speak at the GOP Convention in Cleveland.
