Amritsar, February 11:
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has officially removed Giani Harpreet Singh from his position as Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib. In his place, the current Head Granthi, Giani Jagatar Singh, has been appointed as the interim Jathedar.
The decision was taken during an SGPC executive meeting on Monday, where the findings of an inquiry committee investigating allegations against Giani Harpreet Singh were reviewed and accepted. Based on the committee’s report, he was relieved of his duties.
SGPC’s Decision and Inquiry Findings
SGPC Secretary Pratap Singh stated that the decision was reached based on the investigation’s conclusions, with the majority of executive members supporting the removal. While three members opposed the decision, the rest of the committee endorsed the dismissal.
The inquiry found sufficient grounds for his removal, citing actions that allegedly tarnished the dignity of Takht Sahib. Consequently, SGPC has appointed Giani Jagatar Singh to take over the responsibilities of Jathedar on an interim basis.
Allegations Against Giani Harpreet Singh
The controversy began on December 16, 2024, when a complaint was filed with the SGPC president by Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Sri Muktsar Sahib. He accused Giani Harpreet Singh of interfering in his marital life, which allegedly led to his divorce. The complainant, a former SGPC employee, claimed that due to these events, he lost his job and suffered from depression.
Additionally, Giani Harpreet Singh was accused of making controversial statements against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on public platforms, allegedly damaging the party’s reputation and causing political setbacks.
SGPC’s decision is seen as an effort to uphold the sanctity of Takht Sahib and maintain the committee’s credibility.
