New Delhi, February 18:

In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has temporarily prohibited YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, ‘India’s Got Latent’ show host Samay Raina, and Apoorva Mukhija from airing any shows until further orders. The decision came after the court reviewed a petition filed by Ranveer Allahbadia, seeking to consolidate multiple FIRs filed against him in different states, including Maharashtra and Assam, over his controversial remarks about “parental sex” made during an appearance on Samay Raina’s YouTube show.

The Supreme Court expressed disapproval of Allahbadia’s comments, which sparked an intense backlash online. However, the court also granted him interim protection from arrest concerning the multiple FIRs. Furthermore, the court ruled that no additional FIRs could be filed against Allahbadia in connection with his remarks made during the show.

In addition, the court imposed specific restrictions on Allahbadia, including a directive for him to surrender his passport at the Thane police station. As per the court’s ruling, Allahbadia is not permitted to travel abroad without prior permission from the court.

The petition was heard by a two-judge bench, consisting of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Kotiswar Singh. Allahbadia was represented by advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, the son of former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court condemned Allahbadia’s comments, questioning the counsel on the appropriateness of the language used. The court expressed concerns about the influence of such remarks, particularly given the popularity of influencers, and questioned whether society should tolerate such behavior. The court emphasized the importance of responsibility when using public platforms.

Allahbadia’s lawyer mentioned receiving threats, including one offering a reward for harming Allahbadia. In response, Justice Surya Kant remarked that while threats were disapproved, they also represented another form of seeking attention.

The Supreme Court has instructed Allahbadia to fully cooperate with the investigation regarding the FIRs filed in Maharashtra and Assam.
