Phagwara, January 27:

On Republic Day, an incident involving the vandalism of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s statue and the burning of the Constitution’s copy at Amritsar’s Heritage Street has sparked widespread outrage. In protest, Amritsar has been shut down today. Locals apprehended the accused and handed them over to the police.

The incident also triggered anger among the Dalit community in Phagwara. Members of the community staged a protest by blocking the Phagwara Highway. Upon receiving the information, SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti and her team reached the spot to pacify the protestors. After accepting their memorandum, the authorities convinced them to clear the highway and hold their demonstration at Guru Hargobind Nagar.

Demand for FIR

Led by Dalit leader Yash Barna, the protestors handed over a memorandum to SP Rupinder Kaur, demanding that an FIR against the accused be registered in Phagwara as well. DSP Bharat Bhushan, SHO City Amandeep Nahar, and Traffic Incharge Aman Kumar Deveshwar were also present during the discussions.

Allegations of Neglecting Security Requests

Dalit leaders claimed they had earlier requested police protection for Dr. Ambedkar’s statue, but their plea was ignored. This negligence, they argued, allowed miscreants to carry out the act of vandalism.

Call for Strict Action Against the Accused

SP Amritsar City 1 Vishaljeet Singh stated that the accused has been arrested. Preliminary investigations reveal that the individual hails from a district outside Amritsar. The police are interrogating the accused to ascertain the reasons and motives behind their presence in Amritsar and the incident.

In light of the incident, various Dalit organizations have united to demand strict punishment for the culprits and enhanced security for Dr. Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar.
