Chandigarh, Nov 11
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday disposed of a petition filed by Dera Chief Ram Rahim, which was related to a sacrilege case. In the petition, Ram Rahim had requested that the investigation of the FIRs against him in the sacrilege case be handed over to the CBI.
Last month, the Supreme Court had lifted the stay imposed by the High Court on prosecuting the Dera Chief in these cases. The High Court has now stated that since the matter is under consideration in the Supreme Court, further hearings in the High Court are unnecessary. Based on this, the High Court has concluded the proceedings for this petition.
Ram Rahim had filed the petition requesting that the investigation of the three FIRs registered against him in the sacrilege case be conducted by the CBI instead of the SIT of the Punjab Police. Earlier this year in April, a single bench of the High Court had referred this petition to a double bench and imposed a stay on the proceedings against the Dera Chief.
The Punjab government appealed against this decision in the Supreme Court, requesting the stay on the proceedings be lifted. On October 18, the Supreme Court reversed the High Court’s stay order, allowing the cases against the Dera Chief to proceed.
