Punjab, February 28:

The Punjab government is intensifying efforts to combat drug abuse and rehabilitate affected individuals. In a significant move, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will convene a meeting with all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) on Friday to discuss strategies for tackling the issue.

The primary agenda of the meeting will be the implementation of a new policy aimed at preventing drug abuse and supporting rehabilitation programs. The CM is expected to instruct officials to enforce strict measures to eliminate the drug problem from the state.

This development follows the formation of a five-member Cabinet subcommittee, announced a day earlier, to address the growing drug crisis. The committee, chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, will monitor and coordinate efforts between the police and health departments. Other members of the panel include Ministers Aman Arora, Dr. Balbir Singh, Laljit Singh Bhullar, and Taranpreet Singh Sond.

The government’s renewed focus on this issue comes in response to strong public criticism, particularly from women voters during the previous Lok Sabha elections, who expressed dissatisfaction over the administration’s handling of the drug menace.

Senior officials from departments such as Jails, Sports, Employment & Skill Development, Health, and Home Affairs, along with top police officers led by the Director General of Police (DGP), are also expected to participate in today’s meeting.
