In a groundbreaking medical achievement, PGIMER Chandigarh successfully performed the first Zero Contrast Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure in North India. The procedure was carried out on a 63-year-old man suffering from severe aortic stenosis, low heart function, kidney issues, severe anaemia, and a rare blood disorder.
The patient had been frequently hospitalized due to heart failure and life-threatening heart rhythms. Given his high surgical risk, doctors opted for a TAVR using a special self-expanding valve. Notably, the procedure was completed without using any contrast dye, which is typically necessary but can be harmful to the kidneys. According to PGI’s official spokesperson, the patient recovered without any complications, marking a significant advancement in medical procedures for high-risk patients.
