Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), December 30:
Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia has officially assumed the role of Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhawan on Sunday, with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla administering the oath of office.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena conducted the formal proceedings, which included reading the Warrant of Appointment issued by the President of India.
In his address, Justice Sandhawalia expressed his connection with Himachal Pradesh and highlighted his commitment to resolving cases efficiently.
“Himachal Pradesh feels like home. The state has a relatively low number of criminal cases, with the majority involving service and civil matters. My focus will be on expediting case resolutions in collaboration with others,” he stated.
Chief Minister Sukhu extended his congratulations to Justice Sandhawalia, expressing confidence in his judicial expertise. “I am optimistic that his experience and vision will strengthen the judicial framework in the state and further the cause of justice,” he said.
Justice Sandhawalia, born on November 1, 1965, completed his undergraduate degree at DAV College, Chandigarh, in 1986 and obtained his law degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1989. He began his legal career after registering as an advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana.
Prior to this appointment, Justice Sandhawalia served as the acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from February 4, 2024.
