Jalandhar, June 4
Former Punjab CM Charanjit Channi has won the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat. He defeated BJP’s Sushil Rinku. Channi received 3,90,053 votes, while Sushil Rinku got 2,14,060 and AAP received 2,08,889 votes. Channi took the lead right from the first round. The gap between him and his opponent widened with each round.
In the by-election last year, Congress had secured only 27.44% of the votes, and AAP’s Sushil Rinku had 34.05%. But just a year later, the people of Jalandhar have given Congress a 12% higher vote share. Congress candidate Channi received 39.043% of the votes in these elections.
Charanjit Singh Channi received 390,053 votes, while BJP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku received 214,060 votes. Pawan Kumar Tinu of the Aam Aadmi Party received 208,889 votes on this seat, and Mohinder Singh KP of the Shiromani Akali Dal received 67,911 votes. After winning the election, Channi said, “I came to Jalandhar as a beggar, and the people here have showered me with love like Lord Krishna.”
Channi said that money and alcohol were distributed by BJP and AAP during the elections. Congress fought the elections on much less money. The election campaign in Jalandhar was carried out by Congress workers. I recorded an audio message urging people to vote for me. BJP made an appeal from the Dera Sacha Sauda to vote for them. Channi said, “I will now stay in Jalandhar. There were rumors that I would leave Jalandhar, but I will stay here whether in power or in the opposition. The promise to fight against drugs and mafia will be fulfilled. Congress has contributed significantly to my victory. The people have rejected the state government of Congress.”
