Amritsar, Oct 28
Elections were held on Monday for the post of President of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Harjinder Singh Dhami has won the post of President. Dhami got 107 votes out of 141. Dhami has been elected head for the fourth consecutive time. Jagir Kaur, the second candidate for the post of President, has to face defeat. Bibi Jagir Kaur, candidate of SAD’s rebel faction Sudhar Lahar, got only 33 votes. Two votes have been cancelled. Raghujit Singh Virk has been elected as Senior Vice President. Apart from this, Baldev Singh Kalyan has become Junior Vice President and Sher Singh Mand has become General Secretary.
SAD Badal faction winning SGPC elections is a big victory for Shiromani Akali Dal. With this victory, SAD will get a big help in retaining its political ground in the state.
The election was held at SGPC headquarters Teja Singh Marine Hall. The voting process for the elections started at 12 noon. The result was declared at 2.15 pm. For this, all arrangements were made by SGPC. Before this, all the members attended the General House meeting, here the election of the President and Senior Vice President was done through voting. Whereas earlier many times the election of the President was done with a show of hands and bole so nihal cheers.
This time Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has been torn into two. For this reason, Harjinder Singh Dhami was made the candidate from SAD’s side and Bibi Jagir Kaur was made the candidate from SAD’s Sudhar Lahar. At present only 148 members are left in the House of 185. More than 31 members have died in the last 13 years, while 6 members have resigned and the remaining members have gone abroad.
