Chandigarh, January 3:
After receiving a grant of 40 crore rupees from the administration, the long wait for salaries of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) employees is expected to end soon. Due to a financial crisis, the employees have not received their salaries so far. This grant could provide significant relief to the corporation, and it is anticipated that the employees will receive their pending salaries on Friday.
The corporation has been struggling to pay its regular employees due to a severe financial crisis. The MC has a total of 9,748 employees, including 6,965 outsourced staff. The salary of outsourced employees constitutes the largest portion of the corporation’s monthly expenditure, which amounts to around 26 crore rupees, while approximately 16 crore rupees are allocated for regular employees.
Regular employees are typically paid on the 30th or 31st of each month, but this time, the salary could not be disbursed. Officials mentioned that the funds had been exhausted. The salaries could only be released after receiving a grant from the administration. On Friday, the administration released 40 crore rupees to the corporation, raising hopes that the employees will receive their salaries on the same day.
Due to the lack of funds, the corporation has also been struggling to meet its other monthly obligations, such as around 3 crore rupees for pensions, 12 crore rupees for water and electricity bills, 11.5 crore rupees for maintenance work, and 6 crore rupees for fuel needs.
