As the deadline for filing nominations draws near its end, the Congress party has put an end to days of speculation by nominating former party chief Rahul Gandhi to contest from Raebareli. This move sees Rahul stepping into the shoes of his mother, Sonia Gandhi, who represented the constituency in the outgoing Lok Sabha.
Sonia Gandhi, who has been elected from Raebareli in four consecutive terms since 2004, has now shifted her focus to the Rajya Sabha, having been elected from Rajasthan earlier this year.
Meanwhile, in Amethi, another stronghold of the Gandhi family, the Congress has entrusted Kishori Lal Sharma, a trusted aide known for his loyalty to the Gandhi family, to carry forward the party’s legacy. Sharma has previously handled the constituency in the absence of the Gandhis, and his nomination underscores the party’s commitment to maintaining its presence in the region.
