Amritsar (Punjab), 4 December:

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has strongly condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was shot at while performing ‘sewa’ outside the Golden Temple on Wednesday morning. He has instructed the police to thoroughly investigate the incident.

Mann also praised the swift response of the Punjab Police in apprehending the attacker immediately.

The attacker missed Badal, as he was quickly overpowered by the police. The daring attack was captured by media cameras, with reporters present outside the Sikh shrine to cover the second day of Badal’s penance for the “mistakes” made by the SAD government between 2007 and 2017.

Today, the Punjab Police prevented a major incident. Thanks to their quick action, the plot to tarnish the image of Punjab and Punjabis has been foiled,” Mann stated in a post on X.

The police acted swiftly and succeeded in arresting the attacker on the spot… I strongly condemn the attack on Sukhbir Badal ji. I have given clear instructions to the police to immediately investigate the incident and present a report,” he added.

The police identified the shooter as Narain Singh Chaura, a resident of Dera Baba Nanak. Following the attack, he was swiftly taken away by security personnel.

Television footage captured the shooter approaching Badal, who was sitting in a wheelchair due to a leg injury, and pulling out a gun. A plainclothes police officer nearby quickly intervened and seized the attacker’s hands. During the struggle, a bullet hit the wall behind Badal, but fortunately, he remained unharmed.
