Chandigarh, January 24:

A shocking incident unfolded on Thursday evening in Chandigarh’s Sector 38-A EWS Colony when a car driver fired gunshots at police personnel manning a checkpoint and fled the scene.

The incident, which took place under the Sector 39 police station’s jurisdiction, involved District Crime Cell personnel conducting routine checks as part of enhanced security measures ahead of Republic Day. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The events began when constable Pradeep from the Sector 39 police station set up a checkpoint near the EWS Colony, a crowded area home to numerous families. During the operation, a speeding Maruti Suzuki Fronx approached the checkpoint, drawing suspicion.

As constable Pradeep signaled the vehicle to stop, the driver initially ignored the command, halting only momentarily to allow a passenger to exit in a nearby lane. Acting swiftly, Pradeep detained the passenger, but the driver soon reversed the vehicle at high speed in an apparent attempt to hit the constable.

Additional officers from the District Crime Cell arrived to assist, briefly restraining the driver. However, during questioning, the driver pulled out a pistol, firing a shot into the air, causing panic among nearby residents.

The driver then stepped out, brandishing the firearm and firing four more rounds, one directly targeting a constable who narrowly escaped by ducking. Taking advantage of the commotion, the driver and his accomplice fled in the vehicle.

Drug Trafficking Suspected

Police suspect the individuals may be involved in drug-related activities, as the EWS Colony in Sector 38 has recently been under scrutiny for connections to drug trafficking. The area has seen intensified crackdowns in recent months, leading to multiple arrests.

Initial investigations revealed the car is registered in Ludhiana, prompting police to dispatch a team to trace the vehicle owner and identify the suspects. A case has been registered under the Arms Act and for attempted murder at the Sector 39 police station.

Authorities continue to investigate, with efforts underway to apprehend the culprits and ensure public safety in the area.
