Canada, January 6:
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may announce his decision to step down as leader of the Liberal Party as early as Monday, according to a report by The Globe and Mail, cited by Reuters.
The report, which references information from three anonymous sources, indicates that Trudeau might disclose his resignation plans ahead of a crucial national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday. However, the exact timing of his announcement remains unclear.
It is also uncertain whether Trudeau intends to resign immediately or continue in his role as prime minister until a new leader is selected.
According to the report, Trudeau has discussed the possibility of Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc serving as interim leader and prime minister. However, this arrangement may not be viable if LeBlanc plans to compete for the party’s leadership.
Trudeau has led the Liberal Party since 2013, a period during which he helped rebuild the party after it had fallen to third place in the House of Commons for the first time in its history.
