London, February 11:
The UK government has unveiled a video showcasing the deportation of illegal migrants for the first time, revealing the removal of nearly 19,000 foreign criminals and undocumented migrants since Labour took office. Following a similar immigration crackdown under former US President Donald Trump, the UK Labour government has also intensified operations against illegal workers in the country.
The initiative, described as a “UK-wide blitz,” has led to raids targeting businesses like Indian restaurants, nail bars, convenience stores, and car washes that employ migrant workers. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted that the Immigration Enforcement teams had a record-breaking January, raiding 828 locations—a 48% increase compared to the previous year. The number of arrests also surged to 609, up 73% from the prior year. A single raid at an Indian restaurant in Humberside resulted in seven arrests and four detentions.
This effort coincides with the return of the Labour Party’s Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill to Parliament for its second reading this week. The proposed legislation aims to disrupt criminal gangs that the government claims are jeopardizing border security. During the recent phase, 1,090 civil penalty notices were issued, with businesses facing fines of up to £60,000 per worker if found guilty of employing illegal migrants.
In January, the government reported surpassing its target of removing foreign criminals and immigration offenders, reaching the highest removal rate since 2018, with 16,400 individuals deported since the July 2024 general election.
