Punjab, February 13:
AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, a key figure in the party’s 2022 Punjab election campaign, has expressed the need for a leadership change in the state, suggesting that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should be replaced. Singh has conveyed his concerns to the party leadership, citing governance issues in Punjab as a major factor.
His remarks follow AAP’s poor performance in the recent Delhi Assembly elections and a subsequent meeting between national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s Punjab leadership in the capital. Singh, however, did not attend the meeting in person, marking his attendance remotely while communicating his concerns separately.
Singh, a former IPS officer and current MLA from Amritsar North, played a significant role in AAP’s pre-election promises, particularly regarding justice in the 2015 sacrilege cases. Previously, he had resigned from his position as inspector-general of Punjab Police after the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed the investigation report he had led into the Kotkapura firing case. His resignation was seen as a turning point in Punjab politics, contributing to the removal of then-Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
Following AAP’s electoral setback in Delhi, Singh took to social media to voice his disappointment, linking the party’s defeat to governance failures in Punjab. He also raised concerns over the handling of critical cases, alleged corruption in government institutions, and the increasing influence of criminal elements within the party.
His comments have sparked political discussions in Punjab, with growing speculation over internal disagreements within AAP and the party’s future strategy for the 2027 elections.
