Bathinda (Punjab), December 27:
A tragic bus accident in Punjab’s Bathinda claimed the lives of eight people on Friday, as confirmed by Bathinda Urban MLA Jagroop Singh Gill. Five victims lost their lives at the scene, while three others succumbed to severe injuries during treatment.
MLA Gill, who visited Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Civil Hospital in Bathinda city, was briefed on the situation by Bathinda civil surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Singla. The hospital is currently treating 18 injured passengers from the accident.
“Five died on the spot, and three succumbed to serious injuries during treatment. Around 18 injured are being treated at Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Civil Hospital. Health officials have been instructed to ensure proper care,” Gill told.
The accident occurred near Jiwan Singh Wala village in Bathinda when a bus veered off a bridge and fell into a drain. Rescue efforts, involving the NDRF, police, and locals, are ongoing.
The private bus, en route from Talwandi Sabo to Bathinda city, reportedly skidded before breaking through the bridge railing and plunging into the drain. Senior civil and police officials are on-site to oversee rescue operations.
Authorities are yet to confirm the identities of the deceased.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the bus broke through the bridge railing before falling into the dirty drain below.
District officials indicated that it was raining at the time of the accident, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
Bathinda deputy commissioner Showkat Ahmad Parray noted that local villagers quickly came to the rescue, helping save several lives. A detailed probe is underway to ascertain the total number of passengers on board.
Following the incident, senior district officials, including DC Parray and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amneet Kondal, promptly arrived at the scene.
