In a recent address to the Sikh community during Khalsa Day Celebrations in Toronto, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the rights and freedoms of Canadians of Sikh heritage. Despite his assurances, loud pro-Khalistan slogans were heard from the crowd.
Trudeau emphasized Canada’s strength in diversity, highlighting that the nation thrives not despite its differences but because of them. He underscored the importance of Sikh values, stating that they are synonymous with Canadian values.
Addressing the concerns of the Sikh community, Trudeau pledged to enhance security measures at community centers and places of worship, including gurdwaras. He assured that the government would uphold the fundamental right to practice religion freely, as enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Amidst the backdrop of pro-Khalistan chants, Trudeau continued his speech, expressing empathy for those separated from their loved ones and announcing plans to increase flights and routes between Canada and India, including to Amritsar. Trudeau’s reaffirmation of support comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding Sikh identity and the complex historical and political context of the Khalistan movement.
