Chandigarh, January 11
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation was accepted last Friday. For the first time in 30 years, there is a possibility that someone outside the Badal family could assume the position of SAD President.
The Shiromani Akali Dal was founded on December 14, 1920. A meeting of the party’s working committee, chaired by Acting President Balwinder Singh Bhundar, continued until 6 PM. Senior party leader Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema stated that Sukhbir Badal’s resignation was accepted in adherence to the religious penalty imposed by Akal Takht Sahib.
It has been decided that elections for the new president and the formation of a new committee will be held on March 1. Dr. Cheema, who has been appointed the chief election officer for the process, announced that a membership drive will run from January 20 to February 20, aiming to enroll 2.5 million new members.
Veteran leader and former minister Gulzar Singh Ranike has been appointed as the chief election officer for the March 1 elections. Additionally, Acting President Bhundar has designated Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema as the secretary for coordinating the election process.
