New Delhi, December 27:
The Supreme Court expressed concern for the safety and well-being of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike, and instructed the Punjab government to ensure he receives necessary medical assistance.
A vacation bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia issued a notice to the Punjab government following a contempt petition against the state’s chief secretary for failing to comply with the court’s previous order regarding medical aid to Dallewal.
“If there is a law and order issue, it must be dealt with strictly. Someone’s life is at risk, and this needs to be taken seriously. Medical help must be provided, and there is a perception that this is not being followed,” the bench remarked.
The court directed the Punjab government to submit a compliance report by Saturday, when the case will be heard again.
Dallewal has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border since November 26, demanding that the government accept farmers’ demands, including a legal assurance of a minimum support price for crops.
