The initial trends from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab reveal significant gains for the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while the BJP has failed to open its account. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Congress is leading in five seats, and the AAP is ahead in three constituencies.
Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi has secured a decisive victory in the Jalandhar reserved parliamentary constituency with a margin of 1,75,993 votes. In another notable win, Congress candidate Amar Singh triumphed in the Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha seat, defeating AAP’s Gurpreet Singh GP by 34,202 votes.
The AAP also saw success with Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer winning the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat, defeating Congress’s Sukhpal Singh Khaira by a margin of 1,72,560 votes.
The current trends indicate the Congress is leading in the Amritsar, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, and Patiala seats, while AAP is leading in Hoshiarpur and Anandpur Sahib. Independent candidate and Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh is leading from the Khadoor Sahib seat, and Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the son of one of the assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is leading in Faridkot.
Additionally, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal is leading from the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat against AAP nominee Gurmeet Singh Khuddian.
The counting of votes for Punjab’s 13 Lok Sabha seats and the lone Chandigarh seat began at 8 am under tight security arrangements. The results reflect a significant shift in the political landscape of Punjab, with traditional parties facing stiff competition from newer and independent candidates.
