Chandigarh, February 22:
The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association has announced that its members will refrain from working on February 24 in protest against the proposed Advocates (Amendment) Act, 2025. The decision was made unanimously by the association’s executive committee on February 21.
Acting President Jasdev Singh Brar and Honorary Secretary Swarn Singh Tiwana stated that the protest reflects their strong discontent with the Bill, which they believe contains provisions that could negatively impact both lawyers and the judiciary.
Meanwhile, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has already raised objections to the proposed legislation, which was released for public comments on February 13. The BCI has expressed deep concerns, arguing that certain clauses in the Bill could significantly affect the legal profession and compromise its independence.
