The upcoming Municipal Corporation elections have sparked a surge in political activity across Panipat. As the BJP and Congress gear up for the contest, both parties are in the process of selecting their candidates for the 26 wards and the mayoral post. Though the official announcements are yet to be made, the electoral landscape is already heating up.
BJP Sees High Interest in Mayoral and Councillor Positions
The BJP has witnessed a significant number of applications from party members eager to contest the elections. According to BJP district president Dushyant Bhatt, 23 individuals have expressed their intent to run for mayor, while approximately 220 aspirants have applied for councillor positions. The enthusiasm within the party ranks is evident as candidates actively seek the BJP ticket.
Among the key contenders for the mayoral race are former Mayor Avneet Kaur, industrialists, and political figures. The list of hopefuls includes Navin Bhatia, Gaurav Goyal, three-time councillor Sanjeev Dahiya, BJP women’s district president Komal Saini, Surender Kumar, Dr. Surender Tuteja, Sanjay Aggarwal, Sarabjeet Singh, former MP’s PA Himanshu Sharma, Subhash Chand Saini, Malti Arora, Devender Dutta, Meghraj Gupta, Shakuntla Garg, Suresh Gumbar, Rajiv Jain, Manish Jain, Sandeep Ralhan, Krishan Arya, Tarun Gandhi, Suresh Saini, and Jeewan Das Goyal.
Additionally, former councillor Lokesh Nangroo and BJP state general secretary Dr. Archna Gupta are being considered as potential candidates for the mayoral post. Meanwhile, around 220 individuals have applied for councillor positions, further indicating the competitive nature of the upcoming elections.
Aspiring candidates, accompanied by their supporters, have been actively lobbying at the BJP district office, hoping to secure the party symbol. While the official ticket distribution is still pending, the political landscape is already shifting.
“The overwhelming number of applications reflects the high morale of BJP workers. With major victories in last year’s parliamentary and assembly elections, our party members are highly motivated, leading to such a strong response,” said a senior BJP leader.
Confirming the enthusiasm among aspirants, BJP district president Dushyant Bhatt stated, “So far, 23 party members have applied for the mayoral seat, while around 220 have shown interest in councillor positions. The final selection will be based on merit after thorough discussions.”
Congress Prepares Its Strategy for the Elections
Meanwhile, the Congress party has also begun its groundwork for the civic polls. Party leader Ombir Panwar confirmed that the Congress would contest under its official symbol. “We are internally preparing for the elections, and in the next two days, we will conduct strategy meetings to finalize our approach,” he stated.
As both parties intensify their preparations, Panipat is set to witness a high-stakes political battle in the coming days.
