Chandigarh, 3 December, 2024
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Union Home Minister Amit Shah, inaugurated the practical implementation of three groundbreaking criminal laws in Chandigarh. These laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively. These reforms came into effect on July 1, marking a significant shift in India’s legal framework.
The event included a live demonstration of the application of these laws, showcasing the use of digital platforms like e-Sakshya, Nyay Setu, Nyay Shruti, and e-Summons. These technologies have streamlined processes related to law enforcement, judicial procedures, and evidence management. The demonstration even simulated a crime scene investigation to illustrate the real-world application of these digital tools.
Developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in collaboration with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), these platforms aim to modernize India’s justice system.
