Phagwara, February 1:
Today, Phagwara residents will finally have their new mayor. The election for the positions of mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor, which was postponed on January 25, will take place today. The Jalandhar Division Commissioner had issued a notice regarding the rescheduled election, stating that a meeting of the councilors would be held today at 4:00 PM in the auditorium of the Phagwara Municipal Corporation, located at the backside of the PWD Rest House.
During this meeting, councilors from wards number 12 and 13 will first take an oath of allegiance to the constitution. Following this, elections for the mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor will be conducted. The elections were originally halted after a commotion during the council meeting following the oath-taking on January 25. In response, the Congress party described the incident as an attack on democracy and filed a petition in the High Court. During the hearing of the petition, the High Court criticized the Jalandhar Division Commissioner for not conducting the elections as scheduled and appointed Judge Harbans Lal as the election supervisor.
