New Delhi, December 17:

The Constitution Amendment Bill related to holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly known as the ‘One Nation-One Election’ Bill, was presented by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Meanwhile, the discussion on the Constitution is ongoing in the Rajya Sabha.

Demand to Refer the Bill to JPC

Both ruling and opposition parties have demanded that the bill be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). Meanwhile, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has expressed support for the bill.

Congress Opposes the Bill, Calling it Unconstitutional

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi opposed the bill, stating that it undermines the people’s right to vote. He claimed that the bill gives excessive powers to the Election Commission. According to the Constitution, the Election Commission is only authorized to conduct elections, but this bill allows the President to seek advice from the Election Commission regarding elections, which Gogoi said violates constitutional provisions.
