Chandigarh, January 21:
In a bid to address the rising issue of unpaid traffic fines, the Chandigarh Administration has announced that vehicle owners with five or more pending challans will face strict action. This includes the cancellation of their driving licences and the suspension of their vehicle registration certificates (RCs).
According to Pradhuman Singh, In-Charge of the Registering and Licensing Authority, over 7.5 lakh challans remain unpaid in the city, highlighting a growing concern about traffic violations. Singh stated, “Traffic offences such as speeding, jumping red lights, and reckless driving are major contributors to road accidents. Despite repeated notices, many offenders fail to clear their dues, which necessitates decisive action.”
To address the issue, notices will be issued to violators, giving them a 15-day window to pay their outstanding fines. Failure to comply will result in the cancellation of driving licences and the suspension of RCs. Additionally, vehicles linked to these unpaid challans will be flagged as “Not to be Transacted.” This restriction will prevent actions such as ownership transfers, renewal of RCs, and issuance of duplicate documents until all penalties are cleared.
The move aims to enforce traffic regulations and improve road safety across Chandigarh.
