New Delhi, December 5:
In a unique form of protest, MPs from the INDIA bloc wore black jackets adorned with stickers reading “Modi Adani Ek Hai” and “Adani Safe Hai” while raising slogans outside Parliament, demanding a joint parliamentary inquiry into the Adani issue.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, attached the sticker to his signature white T-shirt. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot allow an investigation into Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, as doing so would essentially mean investigating Modi himself.
Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as MPs from opposition parties like the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Left, participated in the demonstration.
Both Rahul and Priyanka insisted that the issue of Adani’s indictment in a U.S. court on charges of bribery and fraud should be raised in Parliament, and they called on Prime Minister Modi to address the matter in the House.
The protest was held at the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament, following an advisory issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat and Speaker Om Birla, which urged MPs not to protest on the main steps.
Soon after, the protesting MPs gathered in front of the Samvidhan Sadan, where they continued raising slogans against Modi and Adani.
On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued an advisory asking MPs not to block the Parliament gates, as such actions could interfere with movement and compromise safety and security.
The opposition MPs had previously protested at Makar Dwar on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Trinamool Congress, however, refrained from participating in the protests against Adani.
The Congress and several other opposition parties have called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation following Adani’s indictment and those of other company officials in a U.S. court.
Congress has argued that Adani’s indictment “vindicates” their call for a JPC investigation into the “scams” associated with his conglomerate.
Rahul Gandhi has demanded the immediate arrest of Adani.
The Adani Group has, however, rejected all allegations, describing them as “baseless”.
