Kerala, February 12:
Five senior students of Government Nursing College in Kottayam have been arrested for allegedly ragging first-year students over a period of nearly three months, police reported on Wednesday.
The case was registered after three first-year students filed a complaint detailing severe physical and mental harassment by their seniors. According to their statement, the ragging began in November last year and involved inhumane treatment.
The victims alleged that they were forced to stand naked and subjected to physical abuse using weightlifting dumbbells. They were also reportedly injured with compasses and other sharp objects, after which a lotion was applied to their wounds. Additionally, the seniors allegedly smeared cream on their faces, heads, and mouths as part of the harassment.
The complaint further accused the seniors of extorting money from juniors every Sunday to purchase alcohol. The ragging also involved frequent physical assaults.
Unable to endure the ordeal any longer, three students finally approached the Kottayam Gandhinagar police, leading to the arrest of five third-year students. Authorities are investigating further to determine if more students were involved in the ragging incidents.
