Joint Parliamentary Committee Approves Waqf Amendment Bill

New Delhi, January 27:

On Monday, the Joint Parliamentary Committee reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill gave its approval, adopting all the proposed changes from the ruling BJP-led NDA members while rejecting every amendment suggested by opposition members.

572 Proposed Amendments

A total of 572 amendments were proposed to the draft bill, a subject of intense debate between the government and opposition parties. The Joint Committee, led by BJP leader Jagdambika Pal, circulated a consolidated list of the amendments late on Sunday.

The committee discussed the proposed changes in detail during its meeting on Monday.

About the Waqf Amendment Bill

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was referred to the joint parliamentary committee on August 8 after it was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju. The bill aims to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 to address the challenges in regulating and managing Waqf properties.
