Jalandhar, February 19:
Farmers in Fatehpur Bhagwan village, located in the Lohian area of Jalandhar, have staged a protest outside an agent’s house, accusing him of fraud. Allegedly, the agent took ₹26 lakh from a family on the false promise of sending their son abroad. Angered by the deception, the farmers have set up a permanent protest and vowed not to leave until their money is fully returned.
According to reports, Harjinder Singh, the victim’s father, stated that his son wanted to go to the United States. The family approached a local agent who assured them of a successful migration and took ₹26 lakh. However, instead of sending him to the US, the agent misled them and sent Gurjit Singh to Dubai.
After six months, Gurjit returned home, and the family demanded their money back. However, the agent kept delaying and making excuses. Frustrated and mentally distressed, Gurjit eventually took his own life.
Harjinder Singh further revealed that the agent had initially promised to refund the entire amount but has only returned ₹2 lakh so far. The family, after repeated failed attempts to recover their money, sought the support of the Kisan Sangharsh Committee, leading to the ongoing protest.
The protesting farmers have declared that they will not leave until the agent repays the full amount. Meanwhile, the Lohian police have arrived at the scene and begun investigating the case.
