Chandigarh, January 23:
Amritpal Singh, the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Khadoor Sahib in Punjab, has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking permission to attend the ongoing Parliament session and participate in the Republic Day celebrations on January 26. Currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, Singh’s petition emphasizes his role as the voice of his 19 lakh constituents.
In his plea, Singh argued that his continued detention is unjust and politically motivated, aimed at suppressing his rising influence. The detention order, originally issued by the Deputy Magistrate of Amritsar in March 2023, has been repeatedly extended. A new detention order was introduced in March 2024, citing reasons such as social media posts and allegedly unauthorized items found in his jail cell—claims Singh dismissed as baseless and unconstitutional.
Singh further contended that his incarceration not only violates his constitutional rights but also denies his constituents their democratic representation. Through his legal petition, he has requested temporary release and a swift resolution to his case.
Family Criticizes UAPA Imposition
On January 9, Tarsem Singh, father of Independent MP and ‘Waris Punjab De’ Chief Amritpal Singh, criticized the invocation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against his son. He described the move as a deliberate attempt to prevent their family from establishing a political party.
Speaking to the media, Tarsem Singh said, “The authorities imposed UAPA on him just as the NSA was about to expire. This is a conspiracy to stop us from launching our political party. Such actions, without any proper investigation or evidence, expose the anti-Sikh bias of the administration and defame Amritpal.”
Police Confirmation
Faridkot Police officials have confirmed the application of UAPA against Amritpal Singh. This adds another layer of complexity to the legal and political controversy surrounding the MP’s detention. His case has sparked significant debate over issues of democratic representation, political freedom, and the use of stringent laws like NSA and UAPA against political figures.
