Punjab, January 14:

During the Maghi Mela political conference in Muktsar, pro-Khalistan MP Amritpal announced his new party, named ‘Akali Dal Waris Punjab De’. Amritpal, who is currently imprisoned in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, has been appointed as the party’s president.

The announcement was made by Amritpal’s father, Tarsem Singh, and independent MP Sarabjit Singh from Faridkot. They stated that a committee has been formed to manage the party’s affairs while Amritpal remains in jail.

Leaders Criticize Existing Political Framework

Party leader Jaskaran Singh Kahan Singh Wala criticized the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and claimed that this marks a clash of ideologies. He accused Delhi’s leadership of causing harm to the Sikh community and Punjab. Singh alleged that this “Delhi mindset” is responsible for suppressing farmers, exploiting Punjab’s water resources, and keeping Sikh prisoners detained unnecessarily.

He also mentioned that the Election Commission had reviewed three potential names for the party, ultimately approving ‘Akali Dal Waris Punjab De’.

Significant Electoral Win

Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat with a significant margin, securing 4,04,430 votes, defeating Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira, who garnered 2,07,310 votes. Following his victory, Amritpal’s wife and legal counsel visited him in Dibrugarh jail to celebrate the achievement.

Amritpal’s Imprisonment Timeline

Amritpal has been in custody since April 2023, following a high-profile incident on February 23, 2023, when he led a large crowd to storm the Ajnala police station in Amritsar, resulting in vandalism. He evaded authorities until March 18, when a non-bailable warrant was issued against him. Punjab Police apprehended him on April 23 in Moga, charging him under the National Security Act (NSA). He was subsequently transferred to Dibrugarh jail, where he contested and won the Lok Sabha election.
