Toronto, May 3

In a devastating turn of events, an Indian couple, along with their three-month-old grandchild, were among the four casualties in a fiery multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Whitby, Ontario. The incident unfolded as police pursued a liquor store robbery suspect driving the wrong way.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) revealed that the deceased couple, aged 60 and 55 respectively, were visiting from India. However, their identities have not been disclosed by the SIU. The collision, which involved at least six vehicles, claimed the lives of all four victims, including the infant grandson. Furthermore, the parents of the child, aged 33 and 27, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital. The mother’s condition is reported to be serious.

Tragically, the pursuit ended with the demise of the robbery suspect, who was also killed in the collision. Additionally, a 38-year-old male passenger from the suspect’s cargo van suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized.

Authorities disclosed that the pursuit originated from a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville, escalating into a high-speed chase against opposing traffic on Highway 401. The pursuit lasted approximately 20 minutes before culminating in the fatal collision. Autopsies for the victims were conducted in Toronto on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a team of investigators from the SIU, including forensic experts and collision reconstructionists, are diligently probing the incident.

The SIU, mandated to investigate incidents involving police resulting in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault, has taken charge of the case, seeking to unravel the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
