India, January 13:

The Ministry of External Affairs called in Nural Islam, the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, on Monday, following a similar move by Bangladesh the day before.

This summons comes after the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry had expressed serious concerns regarding the recent fencing activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border. On Sunday, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry had called in India’s High Commissioner to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, to lodge its objections.

According to a statement from Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry, Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md Jashim Uddin conveyed the government’s concerns to Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma. He raised issues over the actions of the Border Security Force (BSF) along the border, particularly the unauthorized attempt to install barbed wire fencing, which has resulted in heightened tensions and disturbances along the border.

The statement also referenced the recent incident where a Bangladeshi citizen was allegedly killed by the BSF in Sunamganj, expressing deep concern and disappointment over the incident.

In response, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma emphasized India’s commitment to addressing border security through a cooperative approach aimed at preventing crimes such as smuggling, trafficking, and the movement of criminals across the border. He reaffirmed the importance of cooperation between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) forces to combat cross-border crimes.

“We have been in communication with Bangladesh’s Border Guard to implement a cooperative approach to combat crimes,” Verma said after meeting with the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary.
