The High Court has issued a contempt notice to the Punjab State Election Commissioner and the Punjab Government for failing to comply with its orders regarding municipal corporation and municipality elections. The court warned that if action isn’t taken within the next 10 days, a fine of ₹50,000 will be imposed on the Punjab government.
On October 14, the High Court ordered the Punjab government to issue a notification within 15 days for elections to five municipal corporations and 42 municipalities, specifying that this notification should be issued without any new ward delimitation. However, the 15-day deadline expired on October 29, and the government has yet to issue the notification.
Two public interest litigations (PILs) were filed questioning the delay in the municipal elections. Despite the High Court’s orders, the election process has not been initiated, prompting the petitioner to file a contempt petition against the Chief Secretary of Punjab and others.
During today’s hearing, the High Court issued a notice to the State Election Commissioner and the Punjab Government, directing them to file a response. The court further stated that if its orders are not followed by the next hearing, a fine of ₹50,000 will be levied on the Punjab Government.
