Chandigarh, December 24:
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Bathinda MP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging a thorough investigation into the recent assassination attempt on her husband, Sukhbir Singh Badal, at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The attack took place earlier this month while Badal was serving as a ‘sewadar’ at the shrine’s main gate—a gesture of religious penance for the “mistakes” made by the SAD government during its tenure in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
The perpetrator of the attack, identified as former Khalistani terrorist Narain Singh Chaura, targeted Badal, who is under Z+ security cover.
In her letter, Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed concern over the apparent shortcomings in the Punjab Police’s investigation, suggesting that their actions raised suspicions. She emphasized that if the incident had escalated further, it could have jeopardized Punjab’s peace and harmony.
Separately, Sukhbir Singh Badal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the President’s Police Medal for Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jasbir Singh, who played a vital role in thwarting the attack. Badal praised the ASI’s bravery, stating: “It was only because of the blessings of Guru Sahiban and grace of Almighty that ASI Jasbir Singh was present there that day.”
Badal continued to commend Jasbir Singh’s actions, adding: “It is remarkable how ASI Jasbir displayed rare and noble courage, commitment to duty and risked his life to safeguard the sanctity of Sikhism’s most sacred shrine, Harmandar Sahib, and to save my life.”
He further highlighted that such an act was “nothing short of providential,” given that individuals intent on disturbing Punjab’s peace and communal harmony appeared to have significant backing.
During the incident, ASI Jasbir Singh, in plainclothes and positioned close to Sukhbir Badal, acted swiftly. He subdued Chaura by grabbing his hands and forcing them upwards, preventing the attacker from firing at Badal. The gun discharged during the scuffle, with the bullet striking a wall behind Sukhbir Badal, who remained unharmed. Security personnel and members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) task force helped apprehend the attacker.
Following the event, Sukhbir Badal shared an emotional post on social media, acknowledging the bravery of Punjab Police officers. Alongside photographs of himself with ASI Jasveer Singh and ASI Hira Singh, he wrote: “Risking your life to save someone’s life is not an easy thing. ASI Jasveer Singh and ASI Hira Singh, both Sr. Parkash Singh Ji Badal has been a part of our family since the days of Sabah. My family and I cannot repay the courage and loyalty shown by them yesterday. May God bless them with long life, good health and all happiness.”
