Amritsar, February 17:
Amidst escalating tensions within the leadership of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the Akal Takht, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Harjinder Singh Dhami announced his resignation as the SGPC president on Monday.
Dhami stated that his resignation was made as a gesture of respect for Giani Raghbir Singh, the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Along with stepping down from his SGPC position, Dhami also resigned from the seven-member committee established by the Akal Takht Jathedar on December 2, 2024, for the reorganization of the SAD.
The resignation comes amid a period of internal conflict within the SAD, where Dhami had been grappling with a moral dilemma. Giani Raghbir Singh, the Akal Takht Jathedar, had publicly opposed the removal of Giani Harpreet Singh as Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib. Meanwhile, SAD acting president Balwinder Singh Bhundar failed to appear before the committee led by Dhami, intensifying the crisis further.
