Jalandhar, Nov 4

Punjab’s Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested a key associate of Canada-based gangster Amritpal Singh Bath, who was wanted in connection with the January 2024 murder of AAP leader Sunny Cheema in Patti. The arrested individual has been identified as Jagdeep Singh Gill, also known as Tholu, a resident of Tarn Taran district.

Jalandhar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh stated that Gill was apprehended on a tip-off while he was traveling from SBS Nagar to Phillaur, intending to head toward Tarn Taran. Under the supervision of DSP Sarwan Singh Bal, a police team led by Phillaur Station House Officer Inspector Sukhdev Singh stopped Gill at a checkpoint near Phillaur and arrested him.

The accused had been wanted since February 14 and faced charges under IPC Section 302 (murder), Section 34 (common intent), Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy), and Section 25 of the Arms Act at Jhabal Police Station in Tarn Taran. Police recovered a .32 bore pistol and a car from the accused.

SSP Khakh added that following the recovery of the illegal weapon, a case was registered against the accused under Section 25(1)(A) of the Arms Act at Phillaur Police Station. During questioning, the accused revealed that he had acted under the direct orders of Bath, who currently resides in Canada. After the crime, Gill executed an elaborate escape plan, initially fleeing to Thailand, then to Dubai, and eventually entering Nepal.

He later stayed in Uttar Pradesh for a while before seeking refuge at his in-laws’ house in Ambala, where the police eventually located him. SSP Khakh disclosed that Gill had assisted two shooters in reaching the location where Cheema was murdered, with Bath personally directing the escape plan after the crime.

The police are now focusing on identifying the main shooters and other accomplices involved in the crime. Investigators are also probing the network that helped Gill evade capture and are tracking any financial transactions involved. The accused has been presented in court and is currently under police remand.
