Chandigarh, 1 May
Former Punjab MLA Dalvir Singh Goldy, along with his supporters, officially joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday. This move comes after Goldy expressed dissatisfaction over being denied the party ticket from Sangrur by the Congress.
Goldy, who was inducted into the AAP by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP candidate Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer from Sangrur, highlighted his frustration with the Congress leadership in his resignation letter to Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. He mentioned feeling neglected and upset by the state leadership, leading to his decision to resign from the party’s primary membership.
Expressing his commitment to fostering new leadership and providing opportunities for promising candidates, CM Bhagwant Mann emphasized the importance of youth participation in politics. He welcomed Goldy into the AAP fold, considering him a younger brother and representing the aspirations of three crore Punjabis.
Goldy, a former MLA from Dhuri seat, had aspirations to contest from the Sangrur constituency in the Lok Sabha election. However, the Congress chose three-time MLA Sukhpal Khaira for the seat, prompting Goldy’s departure from the party.
The move signifies a strategic shift by the AAP to attract experienced leaders from other parties who may feel sidelined or overlooked, as articulated by AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s directive to explore alliances with capable candidates from diverse political backgrounds.
