Chandigarh, January 24:

Renowned lawyer and former Punjab Advocate General Hardev Singh Mattewal passed away in Chandigarh on Thursday night at the age of 74.

Mattewal is survived by his son, Pavit Singh Mattewal, and daughter, Puneet Kaur Sekhon, both practicing lawyers.

According to family sources, his health had been declining due to age-related issues. He had previously suffered a heart attack and brain hemorrhage a decade ago, which significantly impacted his recovery.

His final rites were performed on Friday afternoon at the Sector 25 crematorium in Chandigarh.

Hardev Singh Mattewal, widely respected for his legal expertise, was designated as a senior advocate in 1987. Over the years, he served as Punjab’s Advocate General on four occasions.

Known for his close association with former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Mattewal held the position of Advocate General during crucial periods: twice from 1990 to 1991, and later from 1998 to 2002 and 2007 to 2011.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal paid tribute to Mattewal, describing him as a stalwart in the legal field. “Punjab has lost a giant in the field of law with the passing of Hardev Singh Mattewal. His exceptional defense of the state in critical cases will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to Pavit Singh Mattewal and the entire Mattewal family. May Waheguru give them the strength to endure this loss,” he posted on X.

In honor of Mattewal’s contributions, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association suspended work during the post-lunch session, allowing members to pay their respects and attend the cremation.
