Haryana, February 13:
To mark one year of the farmers’ protest, a Mahapanchayat was organized at Shambhu Border today. A farmers’ group led by Sukhjeet Singh from SKM (Non-Political) reached the site, while several other farmer unions also participated by donating blood to commemorate the movement’s anniversary.
However, tensions escalated when Jai Singh Jalbeda, the leader of Kisan Union Shaheed Bhagat Haryana, and his group were stopped by the police from taking their vehicles beyond the barricades. In response, the protesting farmers raised slogans against the Punjab government and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Amid the heated altercation, the group forcefully removed the barricades and took their convoy to the protest site.
Defending the restrictions, the police administration stated that their primary objective was to ensure the safety of the farmers. Officials emphasized that the stage area was already overcrowded, and allowing more vehicles would create chaos. They further added that if protestors started fighting with the police, their presence would serve no purpose.
On the other hand, Jai Singh Jalbeda accused the administration of deliberately blocking the protesters from reaching the main stage. He alleged that the Punjab government, like the central Modi government, was trying to weaken the farmers’ movement. He stated, “This protest at Shambhu Border has been our home for the past year. Stopping us from reaching it raises serious questions about the government’s intentions. It seems like a deliberate attempt to dismantle our movement, but we will not back down.
