Delhi, January 4:
A 23-year-old man from Delhi has been apprehended for posing as a US-based model and defrauding over 700 women on dating platforms such as Bumble and Snapchat. Identified as Tushar Bisht, a technical recruiter, he allegedly used a virtual international number and a photo of a Brazilian model to create a deceptive profile.
Bisht reportedly earned the trust of women he befriended online, convincing them to share private photos and videos, which he then used to blackmail them for money. The investigation was initiated after a second-year Delhi University student filed a complaint on December 13.
According to DCP (West) Vichitra Veer, the victim encountered Bisht on Bumble in January 2024, where he introduced himself as a US-based freelance model. After gaining her confidence, he shared intimate content and later threatened to release it publicly unless she paid him.
The student, who had limited financial means, paid a small amount after succumbing to intense pressure from the accused. Despite this, Bisht continued to harass her with threats. Feeling overwhelmed, the victim eventually confided in her family, who approached the police to file a complaint.
Following a technical investigation, the police arrested Bisht, uncovering evidence that he had extorted several other women. During questioning, Bisht admitted to communicating with hundreds of women and possessing private photos and videos on his phone.
“He used chatting applications to pose as a US-based freelance model, targeting women aged 18-30 on Bumble. He would send friend requests and manipulate them into sharing private content,” said the officer.
Initially starting the scam for amusement, Bisht later escalated to sextortion. The authorities are now conducting further investigations to identify additional victims.
