Delhi, February 8:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to make a comeback in Delhi after 27 years, securing a decisive victory in the 2025 assembly elections. According to the Election Commission’s latest data at 2 PM, BJP had either won or was leading in 48 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 36. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which dominated the last two elections, struggled to maintain its foothold and was projected to secure only 22 seats.

The counting of votes began at 8 AM, with BJP quickly gaining an early lead as postal ballots were tallied. Despite AAP narrowing the margin at one point, BJP maintained its dominance throughout the counting process. By 1:30 PM, BJP was ahead in 44 seats and was expected to win 48, while AAP was leading in only 22 constituencies. The voter turnout stood at 60.54%, with North East Delhi recording the highest participation at 66.25% and South East Delhi the lowest at 56.40%.

AAP, which had won 62 out of 70 seats in the 2020 elections, was aiming for a third consecutive term but faced a significant setback. The party’s chief, Arvind Kejriwal, lost his seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma, marking a major blow for the incumbent party. Other key leaders like Manish Sisodia and Saurabh Bharadwaj also faced defeats. Meanwhile, AAP’s Atishi secured a victory in Kalkaji against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, and Gopal Rai won in Babarpur. The Congress party, which once ruled Delhi for 15 years, failed to win any seats for the third consecutive election.

Exit polls had already predicted a strong BJP victory, forecasting AAP’s failure to secure a third term and another poor performance by Congress. The official election results, which can be tracked live on the Election Commission’s website, confirmed these projections. The outcome marks a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape, with BJP reclaiming power after nearly three decades and AAP facing a steep decline from its previous dominance.
