New Delhi, January 7:
The Election Commission has officially announced the schedule for the Delhi Assembly elections. The elections will take place in a single phase on February 5, with votes set to be counted on February 8. The announcement was made during a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and other senior election officials.
The term of the current 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly ends on February 23, and the elections must be held prior to that to form a new House. Delhi has historically conducted its assembly elections in a single phase.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is intensifying its efforts to make a comeback. The Congress Party is also in the fray, contesting alone and targeting both the BJP and AAP, which had been its ally during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In addition, Mr. Kumar highlighted that India is on the brink of reaching a milestone of one billion voters, making it a new record for the country. He mentioned, “The electoral rolls were published yesterday, and we are about to cross the 99 crore voter mark, which means India will soon become a nation with one billion voters.”
Mr. Kumar also pointed out that 2024 is set to be a year of significant elections globally, with two-thirds of the world’s democratic population voting in various elections.
