Himachal Pradesh, February 11:
Daughters in Himachal Pradesh will now have equal rights to ancestral property, just like sons. The state government has made a significant amendment to the Himachal Pradesh Ceiling on Land Holdings Act, 1972, ensuring gender equality in property ownership. The revised Land Ceiling Bill, passed by the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, has now received presidential approval.
With this amendment, adult daughters—whether married or unmarried—will now be considered a separate entity, allowing them to own up to 150 bighas of land. Earlier, only sons were granted this status.
The government has modified Section 4, Sub-section 4 of the Act, adding the term “or daughter” after “son”, thus giving daughters the same legal recognition as sons in property matters. Previously, the law only allowed adult sons to claim up to 150 bighas of land as a separate entity, while daughters were excluded from this provision.
This amendment is being seen as a major step towards gender equality, ensuring that daughters in Himachal Pradesh receive their rightful share in ancestral property.
