Chandigarh, December 31:

Chandigarh’s New Year celebrations will be subdued this year as a mark of respect for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who recently passed away. In light of the seven-day mourning declared by the central government from December 26 to January 1, the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation Limited (CITCO) and several prominent clubs have cancelled their planned events.

CITCO, which manages Hotel Mountview, Hotel Parkview, and Hotel Shivalikview, had originally organized live performances, elaborate decorations, and lavish buffets for December 31. However, a senior CITCO official stated, “We had decided to host live performances, decorations, and lavish buffets at all three hotels and other venues on December 31, but now everything has been dropped.”

Similarly, the Chandigarh Club, Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC), and Chandigarh Golf Range (CGR) have cancelled their New Year’s Eve programmes, which included musical nights and live band performances. “The New Year Eve celebrations stand cancel due to the state mourning declared by the Government of India on the demise of Dr Manmohan Singh,” read a circular issued by CGC.

The Chandigarh Golf Association (CGA), which operates CGR, released a statement saying, “Dr Manmohan Singh dedicated his life to the service of our nation, transforming India’s economic framework and elevating its global standing. In his memory and as a mark of respect to his extraordinary contributions, the Chandigarh Golf Association has decided to cancel all celebrations until January 1, 2025.”

However, many private hotels, pubs, and discotheques in the city plan to continue with their New Year’s Eve parties, citing prior bookings.

Meanwhile, CITCO has announced a musical night on January 3 at Hotel Mountview, featuring Bollywood singer and composer Shreyas Puranik. “This event is part of our initiative to promote weekend tourism in Chandigarh, and we invite everyone to join us and make the first weekend of 2025 a memorable one,” said CITCO Managing Director Hari Kallikkat.
